Nice - End of day

Wakana Sa-to

Picked up Wakana and Hauke at the station.  Some quick catching up on what little I know of the city and we went for some food.  We chatted of our adventures in Paris all night over a meal of fried sea-fare for Nita and a thick juicy (semi-raw) burger, french-style.  It was a 3-cheese (gouda-etam-Iforgot) monster that was delicious to the max0rz.  We chatted a few hours due to the lack of bill, and set out for night-gelato.  Deciding to save our energy for the next day, we headed back for about 10:30pm and got ready for bed.  Day trip for tomorrow, w00t.

Paris, the first full day

(OH NO!  this one didn't get published, going to publish it now...)

*Yawn*.  So we woke up and headed to the executive lounge for a breakfast of fluffy steamed scrambled eggs?  A few tiny breakfast sausages and a croissant.  We met with Souli and headed out.  The day was meant as a quick flash of the main sights.  We zoomed to the Eiffel Tower and snapped some pictures from the square-tree'd park.

We left and metro'd to the Arc de Triumph.  We stopped for a quick Quick Burger burger.  My Euro-fast food had a delicious horse radish cream sauce, mmm...

We snapped pics and walked towards the Louvre.  Nita picked up some warm clothes for the rest of the trip and we ate some eclairs and choco-croissants.  We metro'd the rest of the way to the closed Louvre and soaked in the sunny day at the glass pyramid.  We stopped for a quick beer for me, guising a bathroom trip.

We then hit a squared tree garden that was absolutely beautiful and tucked away.  We hunted down my vinyl toy store and I ached over my decision for toys.  Opting out of lugging a big box across Europe, I bought a blind box from the local store and a cool monk toy.

We metro'd back to the hotel, half-asleep, to get rest before dinner.  Nita and I slept until... now which is about 7:30pm, a half hour after getting ready.  Dinner time! then Moulin Rouge!  Voulez-vous couchez avec moi?

Paris to Nice

Saturday June 8th Day 9

After my drinks we were planning on taking it easy for the early morning rise and fly.  We headed to Souli's parents, stopping to drop off a package to send home.

When we got there, we were greeted with... cheese.  From mild to wicked strong I stuffed my face with crunchy baguette and an assortment of tasty cheeses.  After, we ate dinner with Souli's brother and parents of homemade Laos food.

When Souli arrived we left to do some quick last-minute sightseeing and catch the gay district and the Notre-Dame Cathedral.  With Souli and her brother as guides we strolled through the street lit narrow paths of Paris and stopped for rose shaped ice cream.  The gay bars were spilling into the streets as we left the district towards the Notre Dame Cathedral.  We walked past often bizarre buskers and colourful characters on the way and snapped pictures and took video of the sights.

I was personally exhausted.  I pushed myself hard to soak it in, but days of walking and non-stop late nights took their toll.  We ended the night at midnight but still had to stay up drearily pack and prepare for our very early morning flight.  At 1am I went down to request a wake up call... for 4am.

With about 2.5 hours of sleep, we reluctantly woke up and were driven by Souli's parents to the airport.

We got here in Nice and struggled to contact the apartment manager due to lack of coin operated payphones.  We did manage to take a local airport bus to our stop and was greeted by our contract, Nina.  She seemed norwegian and was very pleasant and informative as she guided us to our apartment.  Tight narrow streets in all directions, old town is a tourist hub.  It was early and the shops were yet to open, so Nina had time and silence to point out good places to eat and helpful tips.  Was got to our apartment which require walking up to the third floor on the most wonky and uneven stairs I've ever used.  The apartment is decent, but has a slight slant which is interesting.

Clearly modernized, renovations couldn't remove the random half steps to the kitchen and bedroom.  Nita and I decided to take the living room and napped immediately.  Nita slept a couple of hours but her hunger forced her downstairs to a local cafe.  I joined her almost an hour later as I was paralyzed into the bed.  We decided to do just a bit of walking and stopped for lunch at a restaurant up the street.  The server was clearly American and had a subtle surfer accent that stuck out in the now tourist filled streets.  Nita had the gnocchi and I had a beautiful but forgettable sweet pepper in oil dish.  We strolled through the crowded streets into the market square where a book festival was clogging the streets.   We pushed through tents and perused the beautiful artwork and unreadable (to me) french dialogue.  The wind kicked up and we browsed further the shops in the area.  It warmed up as we bought delicious cookies and headed back for more rest before Wakana and Hauke's arrival.

It's now 7pm, and they should be landing now.  I can hear the crowds and chatter through the apparently paper thin windows overlooking the streets.  I was happy about this earlier when I was woken up by an accordion player, but I'm sure I will be very annoyed later when trying to sleep.  We're now finally well rested and will call this day as a relaxed catch-up-on-sleep day.

Side Note!

The toilet is oddly placed near the big sink in such a way that when sitting, I could lean forward and drink the tap water...

Shop bop a lula

Friday June 7th Day 8

We are back!  We left in the early morning and met with Souli's parents and they were delightful.  I understood exactly 0% of what they said as Nita spoke to them in Laos occasionally lapsing into french.  I was expecting Laos food, which I would've been fine with, but instead they put out a fresh baguette and croissant.  It was then I realized that we hadn't had baguette yet, only croissants and pastries.  It was phenomenal.  Nita chatted with them as I inconspicuously plowed through half the baguette and 2 croissants.  Not a huge bread guy, I was amazed at how delicious crispy-crusty baguette was.  We ate it with an award-winning orange/lychee jam and mmm-butter.  We left with thanks and headed for a few hours of shopping... which ended up being more than a few hours.

Homeless man's cat + dog.  Awwww

We headed to the Lafayette department store, a huge 7-floor ornately decorated center of shopping madness.  Top brands and ridiculous prices as far as the eye could see.  Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Armani, Dior, Chanel, you name it.  If you

have a few hun- no, thousand Euros to spend, this is the place.  Scarf? 300€.  Polo shirt? 125€.  Necklace? no joke, 80,000€... that's over $100,000 CDN.  We split up and I went to the bande dessiner and toy sections and spent a solid hour and change.  The respect for graphic art was commendable and I wish I spoke

So close...
french so I could buy some.  I found and bought a Moulin Rouge print for 2.70€, a far cry from the 18€ I was planning to spend.  I met with Nita at the designated time and place and we struck out for food.  She had McD nuggets as a snack thankfully.  We ate delicious "Galette" which was basically crepes but filled with cheese, tomatoes, ham or eggs depending on your order.

We planned to call it but with renewed energy we set out to shop at boutiques.  We luckily stumbled upon affordable stores and ended up shopping until 4:30 - 5pm.  A solid 6 hours, I was tired but not excessively.  Our last stop was at a hipster's shangri-la where I perused over Nixon and vinyl toys.  Now tired, we headed back and enjoyed some food at the lounge and a long shower.  I am currently relaxed in bed writing before heading out.  I've had a few complimentary drinks and am feeling smooooth.

Triumphant

We finished dinner and headed up to the executive lounge so I could got some free drinks.  Ironically this was my first wine in Europe.  It was alright.  I'm not adverse to wine but I don't order it normally.  I sat down and a couple of young 20-somethings chatted with me.  I was afraid they'd be boring and I'd be stuck with them, but luckily they were run of the mill backpackers from Chicago.  Brothers that travelled to Munich, Amsterdam, London and ending their trip in Paris.  We exchanged stories and Paris travel tips.  It seems Nita's french is a great shield from Paris's notoriously rude service as we have been treated rather well (except for getting our cheque after eating which I think is cultural).  Nita and I rested upstairs in preparations for our night romp to the Arc again for night shots.

Thanks tour bus...

When we arrived at the Arc, the ticket booth to walk up was closed.  We took it as a sign since the Arc was very tall and we didn't want to climb the stairs.  We stopped for some petit McBaguettes at McD's and Quentin was right, they are called Royal's with cheese.  After night shots and taking in the night scene, we metro'd back for an early start tomorrow morning...
