In high school I was obsessed with Rurouni Kenshin and will undoubtedly be posting about the series in the future. For today, however, I will be writing about the theme song for much of the series. Out of the 95 episodes of the anime, Judy and Mary’s song 'Sobakasu' was the opening theme for 38 of them.
The song starts out and breaks into a heavy guitar riff but quickly jumps to stereotypical high pitched Japanese girls. It is a strange blend of the metal and pop genres, but is fun and interesting. Also, keep in mind that this song was released over 12 years before the strange and quirky Baby Metal, which is another weird phenomenon that I will be sure to blog about later.
Rurouni Kenshin was a defining experience for me, and this song carries with it a grab bag of fond memories by association. As a theme song, I’m iffy about how it actually ties in with the tone of the actual show. This confusion could 100% be due to the fact that I don’t understand anything that’s being said and haven’t bothered to study the translated lyrics. Still, I think it’s a great song, and find myself playing it for that hit of nostalgia.
